About Across the Board
Community Support for children and young people with SEND and neurodiverse adults.

We offer community support for children and young people, ranging from eight to twenty-five years old, who have special education needs and disabilities (SEND) and neurodiverse adults aged twenty fiver years and older. Across the Board is dedicated to providing enriching and supportive experiences tailored to the unique requirements of each individual.
Our Services
Across the Board offers Community Support sessions, starting from a minimum of four hours per month. Upon contacting us, we conduct a home visit to meet you and your child/adult. This initial assessment helps us determine whether ‘Across the Board’ is the best fit for your child, young person or adult.
After gathering additional information and reviewing the home visit notes, we have discussions with our team to finalize the support package that we can offer. Most of our clients utilize their personal budgets to pay for our services. These budgets are allocated for children or young people with or without an Education Health and Care Plan, providing the necessary funding to purchase the provision offered by Across the Board.
Funding and Payment
For those clients that reside in Norfolk, we are pleased to inform you that you can now apply directly for our services via Norfolk County Council’s Short Breaks department. This option provides a streamlined approach to accessing our offerings, ensuring that you receive the support you need in a timely manner.
The Circle of Support is the name of Norfolk County Council’s new approach to Short Breaks. It is being introduced gradually from 1 April 2025.
The Circle of Support is split into four sections, each describing a level of support that is available to families.
- Once placed in a level within the Circle of Support, a family can use their credits to access activities and services in that level and any lower support levels. For example, a child in the Complex level can choose from suitable activities and services in the Complex, Additional and Universal levels.
- The activities and services that a family can access within a level is determined by the credits they’re allocated.
You can access Across the Board in the Complex and Specialist services sections.
Complex
- Specialist services from Norfolk County Council’s list of approved providers.
To access this, the child or young person and their family will currently be receiving social care support or have been within the last 6 months, and/or the child may be attending a complex needs school.
Specialist
As in the Complex category above with alternative options of:
- Respite care which could include overnight support following approval at CWD Panel
The child or young person must have a Children with Disabilities (CWD) Social Worker.
For those who prefer alternative funding methods, we continue to accept self-funded contracts. This flexible option allows you to engage with our services independently, catering to your specific requirements without the need for external approval.
For those that live in Suffolk and those that still have a Norfolk County Council pre-payment card, we will accept payments under the pre-payment card method. This method remains a convenient and efficient way to manage your account and ensure that payments are processed smoothly.

Community Support Activities
Walks in the Countryside
Walks in the countryside are an excellent activity for noise-sensitive young people. The tranquillity of woodland and forests provides a calming environment with fewer people, helping them to feel more comfortable. These young people often enjoy the peaceful surroundings and are receptive to greeting other walkers with a cheerful hello. Allowing them to choose the direction of travel along walkways, boardwalks, and paths encourages a sense of control and relaxation. Additionally, the presence of wildlife and diverse plant life adds an educational and engaging element to the experience.
Play Parks
Play parks offer a dynamic environment where young people can engage in physical activities and socialize with peers. The variety of playground equipment encourages the development of motor skills, coordination, and physical fitness. Play parks also provide opportunities for imaginative play and collaborative activities, fostering social skills and creative thinking.
Transport
Providing accessible and reliable transport is crucial for facilitating participation in community activities. Transport services should be tailored to meet the needs of all individuals, including those with disabilities. Ensuring that transport options are safe, comfortable, and timely allows young people to attend various community events and activities without stress.
Seaside and Beaches

Visits to the seaside and beaches offer a refreshing change of scenery and numerous recreational opportunities. The sound of waves, the feel of sand underfoot, and the sight of the vast ocean can be incredibly soothing. Activities such as building sandcastles, collecting shells, and paddling in the water promote sensory exploration and physical activity.
Sports and Health
Participating in sports and health activities is vital for physical well-being and social interaction. Community-supported sports programs should accommodate various skill levels and interests, promoting inclusivity. Engaging in regular physical exercise helps improve fitness, coordination, and mental health, while also fostering a sense of teamwork and camaraderie.
Shopping
Shopping trips can be both practical and enjoyable. They provide opportunities for young people to practice budgeting, make choices, and interact with community members. Visiting different stores, markets, and shopping centers helps them develop independence and confidence in navigating public spaces.
Workshops and Education
Workshops and educational programs offer structured learning experiences outside the traditional classroom setting. These activities can focus on a wide range of subjects, from arts and crafts to technology and cooking. Engaging in hands-on learning helps young people build new skills, discover interests, and gain practical knowledge.
Towns and Cities
Exploring towns and cities exposes young people to diverse cultural, historical, and social experiences. Visits to landmarks, museums, and cultural sites broaden their understanding of the world and enhance their sense of belonging within the community. Urban environments also provide opportunities for practicing navigation and social interaction.
Exhibitions and Events
Attending exhibitions and events allows young people to experience new ideas, art, and entertainment. These gatherings can range from art shows and science fairs to concerts and festivals. Participating in such events fosters a sense of excitement and curiosity while providing opportunities for social engagement and cultural enrichment.
Gardening
Gardening activities offer a therapeutic and rewarding way to connect with nature. Planting, nurturing, and harvesting plants teach responsibility and patience. Gardening also provides sensory stimulation through the sights, smells, and textures of plants and soil. It can be a peaceful and meditative activity that promotes mental well-being.
Table-top Activities
Table-top activities, such as board games, puzzles, and crafts, are excellent for developing cognitive skills and fine motor coordination. These activities encourage strategic thinking, problem-solving, and creativity. They also provide opportunities for social interaction and cooperative play in a relaxed setting.
Theme Parks
Theme parks offer a thrilling and adventurous environment where young people can experience exciting rides and attractions. Visiting theme parks can be a fun and memorable outing that stimulates the senses and provides a break from routine. Careful planning and support ensure that the experience is enjoyable and accessible for everyone.
By incorporating these diverse activities into community support programs, we can create enriching, inclusive, and enjoyable experiences for young people, fostering their development, well-being, and sense of belonging.
Zoos, Farms, and Sanctuaries
Visiting zoos, farms, and sanctuaries offers young people the chance to connect with animals and learn about biodiversity and conservation. Zoos provide educational exhibits and programs that highlight the importance of protecting endangered species and their habitats. Farms allow for hands-on experiences with agriculture, teaching children about where food comes from and the hard work involved in farming. Animal sanctuaries offer a compassionate look at the care and rehabilitation of rescued animals, fostering empathy and a sense of responsibility towards animal welfare. These visits can be both educational and inspiring, encouraging a deeper appreciation for the natural world and the creatures that inhabit it.
